Mayroyd is an area of Hebden Bridge with a rich history. It was once home to the most important corn mill in Hebden bridge which dated back to the 1500s. The opening of the canal in 1804 strengthened the area’s industrial pre-eminence. Mayroyd Mill, built as a canal-side sawmill at this time, was an important supplier of timber to the area.
 
The mill’s cargo doors would have enabled timber to have been loaded directly onto the canal boats. When it ceased to be a sawmill, it became the home to Lee Farm Eggs which sorted and packaged eggs.

 

Mayroyd Mill was Mango Homes' first project in 2000. This once derelict saw mill was converted to ten family homes and won an RICS award. The mill had been empty for many years since being abandoned by Lee Farm Eggs which boxed eggs for distribution to major supermarkets.

The renovation took 18 months and involved major sections of the mill being rebuilt and work to stop the canal from leaking. The adjacent Lock Keeper's Cottage was also fully restored.
