In 2005 Mango Homes started of the restoration of an entire derelict hamlet of cottages and barns at Trowan near St Ives in Cornwall.
The oldest of the cottages was formerly Trowan Manor and dated back some 300 years and is believed to be one of the oldest buildings in the area. There was evidence of windows having been closed up - probably at the time of the window tax.
Trowan Vean (formerly Trowan Manor)
By the mid ninteenth century Trowan was a bustling small village home to in the region of 150 people. They included miners, a smithy, farm workers and it even had its own vicar.
The surrounding farmland is an area of Special Scientific Interest since it is one oldest farmed areas in the country; the neolithic field patterns are still evident today.
The project received national recognition and was reported in the Times, Observer and Telegraph and was supported by the National Trust.
There are eleven cottages in all each of which has been individually restored using carefully sourced local materials. The hamlet is just a short walk from St Ives along the coastal path. It is surrounded by open countryside and enjoys sweeping sea views.
